Body smooth with no prickles and spines. Caudal fin usually truncate; sometimes upper and lower lobes slightly produced. Body dusky green dorsally with indistinct dark blotches:ventral side white; caudal fin dark brown, tips of upper and lower lobes white; other fins white.
Distribution:
Warm and tropical waters in the world; inhabiting waters between 30〜500m deep; in the western Atlantic from New Jersey to Argentina.
Remarks:
This species is easily distinguishable from other species of Sphoeroides by the smooth body. There are differences between the eastern and western Atlantic populations:in the eastern Atlantic population the dorsal side of the body without dark blotches, the number of pectoral fin rays fewer than the western Atlantic population, the eye slightly larger and the interorbital space relatively wide.
