Body covered with prickles distributed dorsally from interorbital region to dorsal origin, ventrally from below eye to just in front of anus, and laterally confined to area beneath and posterior to pectoral fin; dorsal and ventral prickle portions connected with each other by lateral prickles. Caudal fin truncate. Body dark brown dorsally with many narrow white lines; interorbital space with 2 transverse white lines; ventral part of body white; caudal fin yellow basally, dusky posteriorly, other fins pale yellow.
Distribution:
From southern Florida through Caribbean to Brazil.
Remarks:
This species is separable from other species of Sphoeroides by many white lines on the back. S. greeleyi is superficially similar to this species but is distinguishable by having the lappets on the back. (Matsuura)
