　（科）：下顎に多数のひげがある。胸鰭下部の2軟条は遊離する。（属）：両顎に歯がない。吻突起の後方から始まり眼下を横切り前鰓蓋骨に達する翼状隆起があり，その後角部は棘様でないか，または棘様であっても眼窩径より短かい。眼前背中線上に棘がない。（種）：翼状隆起の後角部はほぼ直角。前鰓蓋骨の翼状隆起の下方に3個の低い隆起がある。主鰓蓋骨の隆起縁は滑らかで，後角部は鋭いか，または鈍い。下顎後部に1個の小さな矩形の隆起がある。吻突起の基部付近に1棘がある。鼻骨に棘がない。眼前棘と眼上棘がない。眼後部に1個の鈍い三角形の突起がある。下顎のひげは片側16〜18本で，うち側枝を有する長い1本は頭長の72〜73％。体側の4列からなる鱗は背側からそれぞれ28〜29+1，33+1，26〜27+1，23+0枚（+印は尾鰭上の鱗を示す）で，第3列と第4列の間の胸鰭に覆われた部分に付加的な鱗が3〜4枚ある。 　サウス・カロライナおよびスリナム沖。　（上野・佐藤） 　(Family)：Lower jaw with many barbels. Two lowermost pectoral rays free. (Genus)：Jaws without tooth. Posterior end of perifacial rim not ending as spine, if spine present shorter than eye diameter. No spine on midline of snout. (Species)：Posterior end of perifacial rim forming nearly right angle. Three ridges beneath perifacial rim on preopercle low. Opercular ridge smooth, its posterior end variable, acute or round. Posterior region of lower jaw with a small rectangular ridge. Base of rostral exsertion with a single spine. No nasal spine. No preocular and supraocular spine. A blunt triangular projection present on postocular region. Lower jaw with 16〜18 barbels on one side, longest one bearing branches 72〜73％ of HL. Scales in 4 rows, 28〜29+1, 33+1, 26〜27+1, 23+0 (from top to bottom row, + indicates scale on caudal fin), and 3〜4 supplemental scales present between 3rd and 4th rows on axil of pectoral fin.
