Counts：D ⅩⅠ-Ⅰ, 15; A Ⅲ, 15; P1 22～23; SLL ca. 40.
特 徴：
（科）：尾柄の横断面は正方形。尾鰭基底の両側には2列の肉質隆起がある。背鰭は棘部と軟条部とに明瞭に分かれる。1科1属。（種）：体高は低く，体長の30％未満。鱗は大きく，側線鱗数は約40。頭部の鱗域は両眼前縁をこえない。体色は背方で黒く，腹方で銀白色。体側に紋様はない。
分 布：
中部西大西洋全域に広く分布し，メインからウルグアイまで知られる。
備 考：
本海域からの近似種A. melanumは鱗が小さく，側線鱗数は60以上で，頭部の鱗域は両眼前縁をこえる。 （清水）
Distinctive characters：
(Family)：Cross section of caudal peduncle square. Two fleshy keels on both sides of caudal base. Dorsal fin divided distinctively into spinous and soft portions. This genus only. (Species)：Body low, depth less than 30％ of body length. Scales large, lateral-line scales about 40. Scaled area on head not exceeding to anterior eye margin. Body color black dorsally, silvery white ventrally. No markings on sides.
Distribution：
Distributing widely in western Central Atlantic, from Maine to Uruguay.
Remarks：
A similar fish known in this area A. melanum has small scales, more than 60 lateral-line scales, and cephalic scaled area exceeding to anterior margin of eye. (Shimizu)
