(Family):Cross section of caudal peduncle square. Two fleshy keels on both sides of caudal fin base. Dorsal fin divided distinctively into spinous and soft portions. This genus only. (Species):Body low, depth less than 30% of body length. Scales small, lateral-line scales more than 60. Cephalic scaled area extending to anterior eye margin.
Distribution:
Throughout the western Central Atlantic, from Maine to Uruguay.
Remarks:
A similar species A. bondi from this area has large scales with 30〜45 lateral-line scales and cephalic scaled area not reaching anterior margin of eye. (Shimizu)
