本種は成長に伴い,体高が著しく低くなり,体高は体長の17%にまで低下する(Haedrich and Horn, 1972)。本標本は大型で体高の低い例である。他種からは,軟らかい体,両顎の歯形が異なる事,鰭式により区別される。 (清水)
Distinctive characters:
(Family):Dorsal fin separated distinctly into spinous and soft portions. Pelvic fin thoracic. No fleshy keel on caudal peduncle. Mouth ending below anterior margin of orbit. (Genus):Anterior end of cephalic scaled area not exceeding beyond anterior margin of eye. BR 6 (Species):Shape of lower jaw teeth much differ from that of the upper, close-set. Body soft. Body color black, snout side white.
Distribution:
Atlantic, northwestern Pecific, Indian oceans.
Remarks:
The body height of this species lessens in growth, its least percentage in SL 17 (Haedrich and Horn, 1972). The present specimen is the example of large size and lower body height. Distinguishable from other species by soft body, different shape of both jaws teeth, and fin formulae. (Shimizu)
