特 徴：
（科）： 背鰭は棘部と軟条部とに明瞭に分かれる。腹鰭は胸位。尾柄に肉質隆起がない。口裂は眼の前縁でおわる。（属）： 体高は高く，体長の40％より大。頭頂の鱗域は，両眼の前縁より前には達しない。背鰭起部は，胸鰭起部より前方，もしくは大形個体においては直上。（種）： 両顎の歯の形は同形。背鰭軟条は24～28本（Haedrich, 1967）。側縁は背外郭に沿う。体中央部から尾柄にかけて浅い溝がある。
分 布：
太平洋，大西洋，インド洋。
備 考：
若魚では体色は黄色で，鱗列に沿って多数の暗色縦線がある。 （清水）
Distinctive characters：
(Family)：Dorsal fin separated distinctly into spinous and soft portions. Pelvic fin thoracic. No fleshy keel on caudal peduncle. Mouth ending below anterior margin of orbit. (Genus)：Body high, depth more than 40% of length. Anterior end of cephalic scaled area not exceeding beyond anterior margin of eye. Origin of dorsal fin before, or directly over in larger specimens, insertion of pectoral fin. (Species)：Teeth on both jaws same shape. Dorsal rays 24～28 (Haedrich, 1967). Lateral line following dorsal profile. A shallow groove, from median side to caudal peduncle.
Distribution：
Pacific, Atlantic, Indian Oceans.
Remarks：
Younger individuals have yellow body color with blue streaks along scale rows. (Shimizu)
