Body strongly compressed. Dorsal and anal fins angulated posteriorly. Caudal fin rounded. Body white; a curved black bar running from just anterior to dorsal fin origin through eye to lower part of opercular region; a large rounded black spot at median part of soft portion of dorsal fin, and a small black spot at upper posterior tip of fin; dorsal edge of soft portion of dorsal fin with a very narrow black line; dorsal, anal, pelvic and caudal fins yellow; a narrow blue line running on distal part of anal fin; a narrow vertical blue line on caudal fin; pectoral fin pale; a diagonal yellow line on posterior margin of opercle and base of pectoral fin.
Distribution:
From New England through Gulf of Mexico to Brazil.
Remarks:
This species is distinguishable from other Atlantic butterflyfishes by a small black spot at the distal part of the dorsal fin. (Matsuura)
