本種は今まで完模式標本が1尾知られるだけだった。近縁種のSynagrops serratospinosus Smith et Radcliffeでは腹鰭棘,第1背鰭第2棘,臀鰭第2棘,第2背鰭棘のそれぞれ前縁が鋸歯状を呈す。Schultz (1940)。本種の和名は鋸歯状の棘に由来する。 (藤井)
Distinctive characters:
(Species): Anterior edges of pelvic spine, and 2nd spines of 1st dorsal and of anal fin serrated, but that of 2nd dorsal smooth (Fig.). First and 2nd dorsal fins well separated. About 30 scales in lateral line.
Distribution:
Gulf of Mexico. Off Suriname. Type locality‐Gulf of Mexico.
Remarks:
This species had been known only by a holotype previously. A close relative, Synagrops serratospinosus Smith et Radcliffe, is characterized by having serrations in the anterior edges of pelvic spine, 2nd spines of 1st dorsal and of anal fin, and 2nd dorsal spine. (Fujii)
