特 徴：
（属）： 背鰭は2基あり，第1背鰭は9～10棘，第2背鰭は1棘8～10軟条。臀鰭は2棘6～9軟条。前上顎骨の縫合部に1～2本の犬歯があり，その後方に広い絨毛状歯帯が続く。歯骨に1列の犬歯がある。鱗は円鱗で離脱しやすい。主鰓蓋骨後縁には2本の扁平棘がある。下鰓蓋骨の間鰓蓋骨の縁辺は細かい鋸歯状。1個の上主上顎骨がある。尾鰭は2叉する。（種）： 腹鰭棘の前縁は円滑。同様に，背鰭第2棘と臀鰭第2棘の前縁は円滑（図）。第1背鰭と第2背鰭は完全に離れている。側線鱗は約30枚。主上顎骨は眼の中央下まで達する。
分 布：
西部大西洋の熱帯～亜熱帯水域。模式産地-ノースカロライナからフロリダの沖合。

Distinctive characters：
(Genus)： Two separated dorsal fins, the first Ⅸ～Ⅹ and the second Ⅰ, 8～10.
Anal fin rays Ⅱ, 6～9. Premaxillary with 1～2 canines near symphysis, followed
by a wide band of villiform teeth. Dentary with a row of canines. Scales
cycloid, deciduous. Posterior margin of opercle with 2 flat spines. Margins
of subopercle and interopercle finely serrated. A single supramaxillary
present. Caudal fin fouked. (Species)：Anterior edge of pelvic spine smooth.
Also, anterior edge of second spine of 1st dorsal and of anal fin smooth
(Fig.). First and 2nd dorsal fins well separated. About 30 scales in lateral
line. Maxillary extending to below center of eye.
Distribution：
Tropical to subtropical waters of western Atlantic Ocean. Type locality-off coasts of North Carolina to Florida.
Remarks：
The genus includes 9 species. (Fujii)
