(Family):Head and anterior part of body much depressed and very broad. Posterior part of body tapering. Skin smooth, naked with fleshy flaps. (Genus):Gill opening extending in front of pectoral fin. Dorsal rays 8, anal rays 6. Bony ridge on snout, smooth. (Species):Dorsal spines 6. Stem of illicium light brown, esca with elongated and pigmented appendages (Fig.). Third dorsal spine longest, reaching to origin of soft dorsal fin. Pectoral fin darker than body color, with chain-like white patches. Ventral surface of pelvic fin darker distally.

Remarks:
The present specimen belongs “caulinaris species complex" having 6 dorsal spines. The present specimen differs from other 4 species in its shape of esca (L. reticulatus, L. kempi, and L. caulinaris have pennant-like flap; L. spinurus has simple flap). (Uyeno and Aizawa)
