(Family): Usually two dorsal and one anal fins; caudal fin separating from dorsal and anal fins; caudal peduncle narrow. Mouth terminal or inferior. Pelvic fin thoracic, never close together. (Genus): No small blackish naked area of light organ on ventral surface of body. Teeth on vomer present. Palatine teeth absent. Chin barbel present. Pelvic fin with short base and a single elongate ray which branched into two rays from near base. (Species): Upper jaw reaching below middle of eye. Teeth on jaws forming a band, outer series enlarged. Gill rakers long and slender. First dorsal fin ray produced; anterior part of anal fin elevated. No distinct blackish mark on posterior end dorsal and anal fins.

Western North Atlantic.
Remarks:
The present species resembles L. melanurum, but the latter differs in having distinct blackish triangular blotch on posterior end of dorsal and anal fins, pectoral fin rays 25, and gill rakers 5+15. (Arai)
