(Family): Usually two dorsal and one anal fins; caudal fin separating from dorsal and anal fins; caudal peduncle narrow. Pelvic fin thoracic, never close together. (Genus): A small blackish naked area of light organ usually present before anus. No tooth on vomer and paratines. Outer teeth on jaws usually not enlarged. Anal fin beginning much behind origin of dorsal. (Species): Barbel present. Upper jaw reaching below hind margin of orbit. Eye diameter 24〜28% HL. Gill rakers tubercular. Naked areas on dorsal surface of head restricted around nostrils and snout tip; gular part naked. Pelvic fin much shorter than head. First dorsal fin not elongate. Anus situated behind midpoint between pelvics and anal. Dorsal and anal fin margins and posterior margin of caudal fin blackish; abdomen purplish; lips black.

Remarks:
A sympatric species P. kaupi has differences in the upper jaw reaching below middle of eye, eye about 20〜25% HL and dorsal fin rays 9〜10-60〜72 (Norman, 1937). (Arai)
