Three pairs of barbel on rostral region, two pairs on lower jaw, one pair on posterior end of maxilla. End of maxilla barbel reaching median of depresses pectoral fin spine. No furrow connecting both posterior nostril openings. A small crescentic bony plate before dorsal spine. Cephalic bony plate large, rather pentagonal. A deep distinct medial groove on this plate, from gill-slit line to anterior. Anterior end of this plate reaching only far from posterior end of orbit. Molariform teeth on palatine. Body dark brown or black dorsally, pale yellow ventrally. Fins membranes brown, with small black spots.
Distribution:
Central America to northern coasts of South America.
Remarks:
This is the only genus having molariform teeth on palatine in the Ariidae. Clarification of species name needs further study. Some freshwater species in this genus. (Shimizu)
