大西洋から報告されている本属魚類の他の一種N. syntresisでは肛門前側線孔数が38〜41である(Smith, Böhlke, and Castle, 1981)。日本からの報告(岡村他編,1982)は本種とは異なる。 (上野・佐々木)
Distinctive characters:
Snout long and pointed, its length 4.0 times of eye. Anus situated slightly forward of mid-body, total length 2.2 times of preanal length. Number of preanal lateral line pores 46〜47. Pectoral fin absent. Dorsal fin inserted over gill-opening. Gill-opening small, its length about 2/3 of eye. Anterior nostril with tube near tip of snout; posterior nostril above the anterior margin of eye, surrounded by thin cutaneous fold. 12〜13 pores along upper jaw. Teeth conical and pointed; teeth on maxillary and dentary 5〜6 rows in bands, those on innermost rows long and canine-like; teeth on vomer irregularly 3〜4 rows and median teeth enlarged. Fins margined black on the posterior half of the tail.
Distribution:
Widely distributed in the Atlantic and Mediterranian.
Remarks:
Two species of the genus are reported from the Atlantic. N. syntresis with 38〜41 preanal lateral line pores (Smith, Böhlke, and Castle, 1981). (Uyeno and Sasaki)
