Mantle short, bell-shaped, 8 cm in length, ornamented by photophores arranged in 24─27 transverse rows, and with cartilaginous ridge running along the mid-dorsum. Head large with asymmetrical eyes. Some 19─21 photophores present on the right eye-lid. Arms long, with cartilaginous ridge on aboral sides except for ventral arm. Photophores on ventral arms 8─9 rows. Tentacular club with 6─7 rows of suckers of which horny rings bear 25─30 small teeth.

Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans.
Remarks:
The crowdness of photophores is in common with H. heteropsis, but possession of cartilaginous ridges on the mantle and arms are characteristic.
