アメリカ・ニュージャジー州からテキサスにかけては亜種のP. p. aquilonaris Rathbunが分布している。
Diagnostic characters:
Carapace globular and uniformly covered with fine granules of equal size, which are not crowded and barely visible to naked eye. Front broadly bidentate. Subhepatic border with a row of fine granules, which ends posteriorly in an obtuse angled prominence marked by a cluster of granules. A very shallow sinus between hepatic and branchial borders. Three tuberculated, more or less depressed spines posteriorly; lateral two are on a lower level and united by a series of conical granules of good size. Chelipeds rather stout; merus cylindrical and wholly covered with rounded granules; inner and outer borders of carpus and outer border of palm rather thick, with fine granules; cutting edges of both fingers finely denticulate, without prominent teeth.
Distribution:
Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Suriname and Brazil, 9-18 m deep.
Remarks:
A northern analogue, P. p. aquilonaris Rathbun, ranges from New Jersey to Texas, differing from this species by having the coarser granules on the carapace and a granule at the hepatic angle.
