Body elliptical and well depressed, body depth 2.3-2.7 times in SL. Head large, about 3 times in Sl. Snout slightly larger than eye diameter. Upper profile of head slightly concave. Eye large, 5.5-6.0 times in head, lower eye slightly anterior to upper eye. Mouth oblique, large, posterior margin of upper jaw reaching below middle of lower eye or slightly beyond. Lower jaw not projected. Fine uniserial conical teeth on both jaws. Gill-rakers rather short with fine inner serrations. Pseudobranchiae present. Nostrils on ocular side closely situated each other; anterior nostril round with a long flap posteriorly, posterior nostril round without a flap. Nostrils on blind side situated near dorsal margin; anterior nostril round with a flap posteriorly and posterior nostril elliptical without a flap. Interorbital region extremely narrow, keeled with bony projection. Dorsal fin originating above middle of upper eye. Pectoral fins rather small, about 2 times in head on ocular side and about 2.5 times in head on blind side. Pelvic fin on ocular side slightly larger than on blind side. Caudal fin round. Scales weak ctenoid posteriorly and cycloid anteriorly on both sides. Lateral line with a branch and curving anteriorly and fairly straight posteriorly. Body brownish, with obscure darker spots on body and fins.

Chilean Patagonia.
Remarks:
Type locality of this species (Mazatlan, Mexico) given by Steindachner (1876) is almost certainly incorrect (Norman, 1934).
