アルゼンチンでは南緯50度から52度の水深150m付近の大陸棚上に,チリでは南緯42度から56度の水深100mから500mの陸棚斜面上に分布する。ファンフェルナンデス諸島にも分布する(Norman, 1937a)。また,ニュージーランド南部及びタスマニア島周辺にも分布する(Ayling and Cox, 1982; Last, Scott and Talbot, 1983)。

Body oval, high, compressed; snout tip rounded and blunt; eye moderately larger, eye diameter equal to or slightly larger than snout length; nostrils situated just anterior to eye; anterior nostril round and posterior nostil slit-like. Mouth comparatively smaller; posterior end of upper jaw reaching below anterior margin of eye; teeth on both jaws villiform, forming one series; vomer and palatine toothless. Gill-cover thin; posterior margin of preopercle weakly serrated. Scales small, cycloid, easily deciduous; number of lateral line scales about 95; midpart of lateral line irregularly wavy. Head scaleless with numerous small mucous pores; gill-cover scaled. Dorsal fin origin slightly behind pectoral fin origin; anus slit-like, situated in about midbody; anal fin origin just posterior to anus; pectoral fin long and almost reaching to level of anus; pelvic fin situated below base of pectoral fin and connected with ventral through fin membranes; caudal fin deeply forked.
Distribution:
In Argentina,it is distributed on the continental shelf at depths of about 150 m from 50°S to 52°S. In Chile, on the continental slope from 100 m to 500 m depths between 42°S and 56°S. This species is also found in the Juan Fernandez Islands (Norman, 1937), southern New Zealand and Tasmania (Ayling and Cox, 1982; Last et al., 1983).
Remarks:
Attains 65 cm SL and 6.0 kg, commonly 30-50 cm SL. Inhabiting deeper waters than the closely related species, S. porosa, S. tinro Gavrilov, 1973 and Palinurichthys griseolineatus Norman, 1937 are junior synonyms to this species (McDowell, 1980).
