アルゼンチンの重要魚で1973年には981t漁獲された(Bellisio, López and Torno, 1979)。本種にはPinguipesを適用する研究者も多い。

Description:

HL 26.2-29.1% of SL; ED 4.2-6.9; BD 17.9-22.5; SN 9.6-11.2; IO 3.9-6.8; UJ 11.1-12.6; CP 9.7-10.5; P1L 18.3-20.9; P2L 17.5-18.5; D1H 10.6-13.5; AH 9.9-10.5.
Body elongate, slightly compressed. Head moderatly large, 3.5-3.7 times in SL. Snout round, 2.5-3.0 times in head. Eye moderate in size, its diameter slightly shorter than interorbital width, 2 times in snout length. Mouth oblique, large with thick, flesly lips, posterior margin of upper jaw reaching anterior margin of eye. Both jaws equal. Pseudobranchiae present. Gill-rakers thick and short. Pectoral fin round, its base slightly anterior to dorsal fin origin. Pelvic fin large, long nearly equal to or slightly shorter than pectoral fin, its origin under pectoral fin origin. Anal fin originating from under pectoral fin tip. Anus situated in midpoint between snout and posterior end of anal fin base. Lateral line single and running from upper insertion of opercle to caudal fin base, curving gradually to middle of dorsal fin, then straight on midbody. Small villiform teeth in bands on both jaws, uniserial sharply recurved canine teeth sparsely arranged outside of each band. Fine villiform teeth on vomer. No teeth on palatines. Nostrils situated close each other, anterior nostril round with a large flap and posterior nostril round with tubular flap. Small ctenoid scales on body and head except snout region; smaller scales on bases of pectoral and caudal fins. Body pale brown with several dark brown vertical stripes and horizontal stripes composed of dark brown blotches. A row of dark brown blotches on middle of dorsal fin membrane. An obvious black blotch on base of upper lobe of caudal fin.
Distribution:
Off central Argentina.
Remarks:
Pinguipes somunambula Berg, 1895 is a junior synonym to this species (Figueiredo, personal communication).
