Body elongate, fairly compressed. Head large, about 3.4-3.6 times in SL; posterior end of upper jaw reaching anterior margin of eye; lower jaw projected. Maxilla large, wide, not covered by rachrymal. A well developed supramaxilla corresponded with a long ascending process of maxilla. Premaxilla with a long ascending process and a middorsal process which slides forward and backward along median dorsal ridge of ethmoid when mouth retracted and protruded. Minute teeth on both jaws, vomer and palatines. Adipose eyelid well developed. Small nostrils closely situated each other, anterior nostril oval and posterior nostril crescent. A distinct notch on posterior margin of opercle. Posterior margin of subopercle concave. Two fairly prominent protuberances on posterior margin of gill-cavity. Interorbital region slightly arched, its width usually slightly larger than eye diameter. First dorsal fin high, preceded by an anteriorly-directed spine. Last fin rays of second dorsal and anal fins, enlarged and connected to preceding fin rays with membrane. Pectoral fin falcate and very long, slightly longer than head. Anal fin preceded by 2 strong spines. Pelvic fin moderate in size, originating below end of pectoral fin base. Lateral line abruptly curved around tip of pectoral fin. Posterior half of lateral line covered with scutes with pungent spines, anterior half of lateral line covered with enlarged cycloid scales without spines.

Remarks:
About 11 species of Trachurus (some of them further devided into subspecies) are recognized so far (Shaboneyev, 1980).
