Material examined:
3 from Argentina (123-136 mm SL), FSFL EL 770; EM 626・1-2.
Description:
D [, T, 28-34; A U, T, 24-30; P1 21; P2 T, 5; LLS 63-77; GR 12-16+33-41=46-54; X 10+14.
HL 27.2-28.9% of SL; ED 7.7-8.5; BD 24.2-25.4; SN 8.1-8.5; IO 5.9-6.5; UJ 11.3-11.8; CP 3.7-4.0; P1L 29.0-31.0; P2L 16.3-17.3.
Body elongate, slightly compressed. Eye large (HL 3.3-3.9 times of ED) with adipose eyelid. Posterior edge of upper jaw reaching to below anterior margin of eye. Small teeth on both jaws in a single row. Shoulder girdle margin with a small furrow at upper end, but no papillae present. Terminal dorsal and anal soft rays longer than anterior ones, both not separated. Pectoral fin falcate, almost the same length as head; its tip extending posterior to anal fin origin. Straight part of lateral line beginning below 9th to 10th of soft dorsal ray with 33 to 39 well developed scutes; height of these scutes exceeded 20% of head length; curved part of lateral line covered with elongate scute-like scales and curved slightly downward at its anterior part. Dorsal accessory lateral lines extending backward along both sides of dorsal fin base and terminated between 8th spine of first dorsal fin and 4th soft ray of second dorsal fin. Body covered with small cycloid scales except for a small part behind pectoral fin.
Distribution:
Atlantic coast of America from the Gulf of Maine, U. S. A. to northern Argentina at depths of 50-90 m, sometimes near surface (Berry, 1977), but our specimens examined were caught at 30 m depth.
Remarks:
Maximum length 40 cm SL (body weight 0.5 kg), usually 20 cm SL (Menezes and Figueiredo, 1980). T. murphyi distributed in southern Argentina and the Pacific coasts off Chile and Peru differs from this species by the body shape, shape of scute-covered part of lateral line and the number of lateral line scales (Shaboneyev, 1980).
