Body elongate, extremely compressed posterorly. Head large, about 4 times in SL. Mouth oblique, protractile and large, its posterior end reaching to anterior margin of pupil. Lower jaw extended anterior to upper jaw. A small bony projection on chin. Band of villiform teeth on upper jaw wider than corresponding band on lower jaw. No teeth on vomer or palatines. Eye moderate in size, 4.5-4.8 times in head. Interorbital region flat, its width as long as eye diameter. Pseudobranchiae absent. Nostrils situated just anterior to eye, anterior nostril round, posterior nostril slit-like. Pectoral fin rather long, its length about 1.5 in head. Pelvic fin situated well anterior to pectoral fin base; outer rays filamentous, longer than inner rays. Two dorsal fins, first dorsal fin base short, as long as eye diameter, second dorsal fin base long, about 10 times longer than first dorsal fin base. First fin ray of first dorsal fin fairly elongate. Anal rin base shorter than second dorsal fin base, distal margin of both fins concave. Caudal fin weak and not obviously forked. Anus situated just in front of anal fin origin. Small, deciduous scales on body and head. Lateral line almost straight, from above upper margin of opercle to caudal fin base.
Distribution:
Both Chilean and Argentine Patagonia; also known from New Zealand and Japan (Kanayama, Sasaki and Sasaki, 1978).
Remarks:
Halargyreus sp. obtained abundantly from 1,158 m depth off Patagonia and reported by Iwai et al. (1971), is this species.
