Body elongate and extremely compressed posteriorly. Head round and rather depressed. Snout round. Upper jaw slightly more projected than lower jaw. Mouth moderate in size and protractile, its posterior end hardly reaching to anterior margin of pupil. Fine conical teeth in bands on both jaws, outer teeth slightly larger than inner teeth on upper jaw. No teeth on vomer or palatines. A short barbel on chin, its length almost as long as interorbital width. Eye large, 3.2-3.6 times in head. Interorbital region flat, its width smaller than snout length. Round nostrils situated just anterior to eye, anterior one smaller, a flap between. Fine deciduous scales on head and body. Pectoral fin rather long, its length about 1.5 times in head. Pelvic fin situated well anterior to pectoral fin origin; outer ray elongate and filamentous, longer than pectoral fin. Two dorsal fins; first dorsal fin base short, as long as interobital width, second dorsal fin base long, about 15-19 times longer than first dorsal fin base. First fin ray of first dorsal fin extremely elongate and filamentous. Anal fin base shorter than second dorsal fin base. Caudal fin rather weak, not obviously forked. Anus situated just in front of anal fin origin. Lateral line originating above upper margin of opercle, gradually curving downward for three-fifths of length, thereafter straight ending to caudal fin base. Body brown. Gill-cover and all fins dark brown.

Argentine Patagonia, bathypelagic.
Remarks:
Type locality of this species is off the mouth of the Rio de la Plata (Günther, 1878).
