特 徴：
（科）：体は側扁し，鱗がない。口が大きい。背鰭は2基。腹鰭は胸位。鋤骨に歯がない。（属）：口蓋骨歯は2～3列ある。発光組織がある。側線は1～2個の小孔で断続する。顎歯は2～3列あり，外側の歯が最も小さい。鰓条骨は7本。（種）：吻は短く，やや鋭がる。体色は黒色，軟条部は灰色または不透明である。胸鰭の長さは体長65mmの個体では肛門に達する程度，体長100mmの個体では第8臀鰭軟条に達する。腹鰭は胸鰭起部より前方に位置する。
分 布：
本種は熱帯，温帯水域の深海に棲息し，西部大西洋ではバーミューダ諸島海域，メキシコ湾中央部，スリナム沖から報告されている。
備 考：
西部大西洋から報告されているP. scriptusは体色が暗褐色，腹鰭は胸鰭起部より後方に位置するので，本種と区別できる。 （上野・藍澤）
Distinctive characters：
(Family)：Body compressed, scaleless. Mouth large. Two dorsal fins. Pelvic fin thorasic. Vomer toothless. (Genus)：Palatine teeth rows 2 or 3. Luminous tissue present. Lateral-line opening represented by 1 or 2 pores. Jaw teeth rows 2 or 3, outermost row teeth smallest. Branchiostegal rays 7. (Species)：Snout short, sharp. Body black. Fin rays gray or opaque. Pectoral ray tip reaching to anus in 65 mm SL fish and 8th anal ray in 100 mm SL fish. Pelvic insertion anterior to pectoral insertion.
Distribution：
Habitat in deep waters of temperate and tropical regions. In the western Atlantic, reported from the Bermuda, central Gulf of Mexico, off Suriname.
Remarks：
P. scriptus reported from the western Atlantic is distinguishable from this species by its dark brown body color and pelvic insertion posterior to pectoral insertion. (Uyeno and Aizawa)
