Body elongate and slightly compressed, body depth 6.6〜7.0 in SL. Lower jaw projecting beyond upper jaw, both jaws with sharp enlarged canine teeth. Posterior tip of pectoral fins extending posteriorly beyond origin of pelvic fin. Last ray of dorsal and anal fins greatly elongated and much longer than penultimate ray. Caudal fin deeply forked. Body brown with a red cast dorsally, white ventrally; pectoral, dorsal and caudal fins dusky brown; edges of anal and caudal fins black.
Distribution:
Both sides of Atlantic. In the western Atlantic from New England to Brazil.
Remarks:
This species is distinguishable from other species of Sphyraena by the following characters:the tip of the pectoral fin extending posteriorly beyond the origin of the pelvic fin, the last ray of the dorsal and anal fins elongated, and no black spots on the side of the body. (Matsuura)
