Body elongate and slightly compressed, body depth 6.8 in SL. Lower jaw projected beyond upper jaw, both jaws with sharp enlarged canine teeth. Posterior tip of pectoral fin not reaching to origin of pelvic fin. Last ray of dorsal and anal fins slightly longer than penultimate ray. Caudal fin deeply forked. Body brown with a red cast dorsally, white ventrally; dorsal side from snout to second dorsal fin dark brown; dorsal and caudal fins dusky; pelvic and anal fins pale yellow.
Distribution:
Bermuda through Bahamas to Urguay.
Remarks:
This species is separable from other species of Sphyraena by the following points:the tip of the pectoral fin not reaching to the origin of the pelvic fin and the last ray of the dorsal and anal fins not much produced. (Matsuura)
