Body oblong and compressed. Two barbels on chin. Snout short slightly pointed. Posterior end of upper jaw not reaching to below anterior margin of eye. Teeth small and conical; arranged in 3 rows anteriorly, 2 rows laterally and a single row posteriorly in both jaws. A spine on posterior edge of opercle. Caudal fin forked. Body vermilion dorsally, silver laterally and ventrally; a longitudinal yellow stripe on body; dorsal and caudal fins yellow, other fins pale yellow.
Distribution:
From Cape Cod to Suriname.
Remarks:
This species is slightly similar to Upeneus parvus but distinguishable from it by having 7 spines in the first dorsal fin. (Matsuura)
