Body oblong and compressed. Two barbels on chin. Snout slightly pointed. Posterior end of upper jaw far from anterior margin of eye. Teeth on both jaws arranged irregularly in 2 rows; some outer teeth on upper jaw canine-like and curved outward. A spine on posterior edge of opercle. Caudal fin forked. Body vermilion with a central spot on scales; several diagonal blue stripes on head; first dorsal and caudal fins vermilion, other fins pale yellow.

Remarks:
This species is very closely similar to Pseudupeneus maculatus but differs from it by lacking dark blotches on the body. (Matsuura)
