特 徴：
体は卵形で側扁する。体長は体高の2.2倍，頭長の3.0倍。胸鰭はやや短く，体に押しつけても臀鰭起部に達しない。頭部の鱗は眼の上方まで延びているが，後鼻孔の上方へ達することはない。両顎の前部に小犬歯があり，側方の歯は臼歯状。尾鰭は2叉する。体は銀白色で背方は淡黄褐色。胸鰭基部上縁に小さいが明瞭な1黒色斑がある。鰭は淡灰色。
分 布：
フロリダからバハマ諸島をへてブラジルまで。
備 考：
本属の魚は互いによく似ているが，本種は胸鰭基部上縁に1小黒斑をもつこと，背鰭に12棘12軟条あること，側線鱗数が45～49であること，胸鰭がやや短いこと，などの特徴で他種から識別される。

Distinctive characters：
Body ovate and compressed, body depth 2.2 in SL. Pectoral fin rather short, not reaching to origin of anal fin when appressed. Scales on top of head extending anteriorly to above eye, but not reaching to over posterior nostril. Small canines at anterior parts of both jaws, lateral teeth molar-like. Caudal fin forked. Body silver-white, dorsal half with a pale brown cast; a small but prominent black spot at upper pectoral base; fins dusky.
Distribution：
From Florida to Brazil.
Remarks：
This species is separable from other species of Calamus by the following points：a small black spot at the upper pectoral base, 12 spines and 12 soft rays in the dorsal fin, lateral-line scales 45～49 and the pectoral fin relatively short.
