Dorsal spines usually 8, rarely 7 or 9. Lateral line curved below spinous dorsal, running dorsal profile. Scales small ctenoid. Body color orange red, 3 dark red bands on eye, mid-body and caudal peduncle

Cosmopolitan in tropical to temperate waters.
Remarks:
Another known species in this area A. combatia has 9 dorsal fin spines and low body depth less than body length. (Shimizu)
