(Family): Squamation by linear, dorsoventrally elongated scales. (Genus): Body extremely high, depth subequal to length. Caudal fin not elongated, margin concave slightly. (Species): Side with about a dozen of round black blotches distributing irregularly. First dorsal spine minute, 2nd the longest. First anal spine markedly long, subequal to orbit. No black blotches on anal fin membranes.
Distribution:
Pacific, Atlantic, Indian Oceans. Habitat in 200〜500 m deep.
Remarks:
Three monotypic genera have been known in this family. Another monotypic genus Grammicolepis has not so high body, body length about 2.3 of depth. Some individuals of the present species have remarkably elongated filament in dorsal spines and first anal spine. (Shimizu)
