Specimens examined：3 (SL 252.0～265.7 mm). Depth：760 m.
Counts：D Ⅴ～Ⅵ, 34～35 A Ⅱ～Ⅲ, 31～32; P1 19～21; P2 Ⅰ, 5; GR 5～6+18～20=23～25.
特 徴：
（属）： 腹部の側面に瘤状の骨質板がない。（種）： 体は菱形で，よく側扁する。鱗は小さく，大きさ・形・配列ともに不規則である。縦列鱗数は約120。体の背・腹中線近傍および背・臀鰭基底の鱗は小棘状となる。背・臀鰭棘ともに長くない。腹中線上に稜鱗がない。体色は青灰色で，眼球径程度の大きさの不規則な濃青色斑が体側全体に散在する。
分 布：
南アフリカ沖，スリナム沖。記録は少ないが，深海に広く分布すると考えられる。
備 考：
本属魚類の分類は混乱しており，属名の適用はBarnard (1925)によった。 （清水）
Distinctive characters：
(Genus)： No nodular bony plate on the side. (Species)： Body rhomboidal, well compressed. Scales small; size, shape, squamation irregular. Longitudial scale rows ca. 120. Scales along dorsal and anal mid-lines and those of bases of dorsal and anal fins ctenoid. Dorsal and anal fin spines not long. No ventral scute. Body color bluish gray, with scattered irregular dark blue blotches about eye ball size.
Distribution：
Off South Africa, off Suriname. Although its scanty distributional records, the present species may distribute worldwide in deep waters.
Remarks：
There is still confusion in taxonomy of this fish. Application of generic name followed Barnard (1925). (Shimizu)
