大西洋に分布する本属の他の1種 S. beanii は鰓耙が26本以上あることで本種と区別される。本種の別亜種 S. m. bispinosus は東部太平洋にだけ分布し,眼の中央と背鰭起部および腹鰭起部をそれぞれ結んだ2線分のなす角度が50〜60度(S. m. mizolepisでは44〜51度)であり,鰓弁が長く,鰓弓の隅角部の鰓弁の長さはそれと対峠する鰓耙の60%以上(S. m. mizolepisでは60%以下)であることにより区別される。 (上野・佐藤)
Distinctive characters:
(Family): Head with many ridges. Anal fin originated under or behind midpoint of dorsal fin base . No isolated spine in front of dorsal and anal fins. Pelvic fin thoracic, with 1 spine and 6〜8 soft rays. Side of body coverd with deciduous small cycloid scales. No photophore. (Genus): Crest-like frontal ridge without serration. Teeth of jaws minute in uniserial. No supramaxillary. Dorsal fin with 1〜2 spines and 10〜12 soft rays. (Species): Gill rakers 25 or fewer. Dorsal fin spines 2.
Distribution:
Deep sea of tropical and subtoropical regions in Atlantic, Indian, western and central Pacific oceans.
Remarks:
Another species of this genus in Atlantic, S. beanii, is distinguishable from this species by having 26 or more gill rakers. Another subspecies S. m. bispinosus distributed in eastern Pacific is distinguishable from this subspecies by following characters:the angel between 2 lines which connect the center of the eye and the origin of dorsal fin, and the pelvic insertion is more than 50 degrees (S. m. mizolepis is less than 50 degrees); gill filaments long, its length at angle of gill arch is more than 60% of the opposit gill raker (S. m. mizolepis is less than 60%).
