Anterior and posterior nostrils situated close each other, and located below the front margin of eye; anterior nostril with flap; posterior nostril elliptical pore with slightly raised rim. Gape long, lower jaw projecting beyond tip of snout. Teeth on anterior part of jaws unusually developed, fang-like, and extending far outside when mouth closed. Distribution:
Trans-Atlantic.
Remarks:
Monotypic genus. The present species is easily separable by the excessibly developed teeth. Anterior nostril situated far back of tip of snout is unique in the eels of the family (Böhlke, 1956). The specimen of 491 mm TL (photo) has eggs and seems fully matured. (Uyeno and Sasaki)
