Pectoral fin absent. Gill-opening restricted to small pore subequal to eye, and situated at mid-side of body. Anus located forward of mid-body, total length 2.2 times of preanal length. Dorsal fin inserted above the mid-point between corner of mouth and gill-opening. Dentary rather strongly curved so that the most of teeth can be seen from the side when mouth closed. Anterior nostril with tube near tip of snout; posterior nostril with slightly raised rim above the anterior margin of eye. Eye small, upper jaw length 4.1〜5.1 times of eye diameter. Vertical fins narrowly margined with white; corner of mouth distinctly black.
Distribution:
Off Suriname.
Remarks:
The present genus is characterized by the mouth which can not be closed completely. Three species of the genus are known from the Atlantic: E. nigricans has trough-like posterior nostril; E. carychroa and E. anatina have the insertion of dorsal fin over gill-opening (Blache, 1967; Böhlke and Böhlke, 1976). The present specimens almost perfectly agree with Gymnothorax vicinus except the feature of the mouth. (Uyeno and Sasaki)
