特 徴：
外套長10cm。外套膜は袋状樽形で，後方細まり，鰭は丸く後位。背中線上には軟甲が表われていてその上に微細な棘がある。外套膜は頭部に癒着していて，腹面の癒合部にはΛ型の軟骨隆起があり，軟骨条上には小棘が並ぶ。頭部は小さいが，眼球は大きく，14個の発光器が2列に並ぶ。腕は短く，吸盤は2列に並ぶ。触腕には4列の吸盤がある。
採集記録：
水深620〜810m（3個体）。
分 布：
全世界の温熱帯，表層〜中層。
備 考：
本属は外套膜の漏斗接着点にΛ型軟骨条があるので，同類の他属と直ちに区別される。同属の他の1種ヒメホウズキイカL. valdiviaeは，やゝ細身で，軟甲上に小棘がない。
Diagnostic characters：
Mantle thin, saccular but tapering posteriorly. Fins oval, posteriorly situated. Head part fused with mantle. A pair of Λ-shaped cartilaginous streaks at the position of both mantle-funnel fusions. Minute spinous tubercles present on the gladius on the mid-dorsum. Eyes bulbous with 14 photophores ventrally. Arms short, with biserial suckers. Tentacular club with 4 series of suckers.
Distribution：
Epi- to bathypelagic in the warm and tropical regions of the world oceans.
Remarks：
This species, along with the preceding species at their early stages of life, are abundantly caught from the sea surface with conventional tow-net.
