Mantle conical, 19 cm in length (exceeds 30 cm in full grown stage), flabby. Fins extend to the entire length of lateral mantle, rhombic in outline. Arms stout, with 2 series of hooks. Tentacle also stout with 2 rows of strong hooks. Sparse photophores present on the ventral mantle and also on the tentacular stalk.

Bathypelagic in the world oceans.
Remarks:
Nesis (1978) claimed that there are two species within this genus:A. lesueuri and A. alessandrini.
