Dorsal surface of carapace truncated, only with a short median ridge at posterior part, which ends in a short spine; upper part of lateral surface with a longitudinal ridge which is directed downward as a transverse ridge traversing hepatic region uniting with a ridge from a posterolateral spine to supraorbital margin; branchiostegal and antennal spines distinct. Rostrum with carinated and serrated dorsal large and several minute teeth along its outer margin. First to fifth abdominal pleurae with two sharp spines, and in sixth segment pleurae of both sides united at ventral side, each tip being pointed, with a small tooth on inner margin. Telson long, with a median narrow and two lateral wide ridges, being armed with marginal spinules. In juveniles all the spines and rostrum are very long.

Pacific and Atlantic Oceans from 40°N to 45°S, 350-4,000 m deep.
