Typical for the spiny lobster; no transverse groove on abdominal segments, but with white spots of variable size only on lateral parts of abdomen; one larger white spot on each segment, and thus in a longitudinal line as a whole. Ambulatory legs with dark longitudinall stripes. Carapace cylindrical, and very rough with numerous spines and tubercles of various size; distal halves of spines corneous. Antennal plate with two pairs of large spines, the anterior spines being larger and more apart from each other. Tail-fan moderately developed, with rounded distal parts of telson and both branches of uropod.
Distribution:
Type-locality is Brazil, and this species ranges northward through the Caribbean Sea and the West Indies to the Bermudas, from lower tidal zone to 46 m deep, although the exact distribution is not always certain.
