Carapace depressed as usual, with three longitudinal rows of ridges which are covered with scaly sculpture; four sharp tubercles in median ridge, the last of which is composed of two and associated with a smaller one at each side apart from it; each lateral ridge originates from two teeth on inner part of supraorbital border, having a tubercle behind interruption; two incisions on lateral border of carapace, and anterolateral angle sharp and directed obliquely forward. Antennal second segment toothed on both of outer and inner margins; anterior margin of fourth segment deeply incised. First to fourth abdominal segments each with a posterior median incision; each segment with transverse furrow with root-like branches for and aft. Telson with appressed four spines at its base of dorsal surface.
Distribution:
West Atlantic from North Carolina through the Gulf of Mexico and the West Indies to Brazil, 55-180 m deep.
Remarks
This species is very close to the European species, S. arctus (Linnaeus),but different from it in the details of the carapace, antenna and abdomen.
