Spirula spirula (Linnaeus, 1758)
特 徴： 外套長3.5cm。外套膜は円筒形で，体後方の背腹面に中にあるらせん形の貝殻の一部が透けて見える。鰭は小さく丸く，外套膜後端の両側にあり，その間に発光器のあるくぼみがある。外套膜前端は三角形状に突出し，後端は深く湾入し両側に三角形状の突出部がある。殆ど色素胞が無く白色の外套膜に対し，頭部は，紫褐色の色素で覆われ，幅は外套開口より大きい。眼は大きく，頭部の大部分を占め，眼には小孔がある。腕は弱く短かく，4列の微小な吸盤をもつ。雄の左右第Ⅳ腕が交接腕で，独特の形態を示す。触腕は細く，掌部は余り拡張せず，微細な吸盤が密生している。貝殻は先の方が次第に太くなる管を一平面に巻いたようで，多室に分かれ羊の角を思わせる。連室細管は内側に沿う。
採集記録： 水深650～825m（11個体）。
分 布： 全世界の熱帯水域，200～700m位の中層に浮遊している。
備 考： 本種は他の中層イカ類と異なり，浮遊機構の多室性貝殻のある体後端を上にして，垂直に浮遊しているらしい。歯舌を欠く点も特異である。
Diagnostic characters： Mantle 3.5 cm long, cylindrical, with triangular projections on the mid-dorsum and both sides of ventral excavation. Fins small, round, separated from each other. Head wider than the mantle with large eyes of which openings exist. Arms weak, carry four series of minute suckers. Both Arms IV in male hectocotylized with a complicated morphology. Tentacle weak, with narrow club bearing numerous minute suckers. A coiled, multi-chambered shell exists within the body. Radula absent.
Distribution： Bathypelagic at 200─700m deep in tropical zone of the world oceans.
