Description:
Mantle cylindrical, robust. Fins triangular; length 45-47%, width 58-61% of dorsal mantle length (ML); fin angle 44°-46°. Head width 15-16% of ML. Funnel-mantle rocking apparatus T-shaped; weak vertical folds (foveora) in funnel groove, no side pocket. Eyes without cornea, in open contact with seawater. No hooks on arms, suckers in 2 rows, bases of suckers enlarged, with fleshy flap; sucker rings with about 7 teeth on the distal half and basal half smooth; arm ? with a rather broad swimming menbrane; right arm ? of mature male hectocotylised (Roper et al., 1984). Tentacles short, but mascular and robust; clubs exteremely long, extended to base of tentacles, 51-58% of ML; 4 rows of suckers on mid part of club (nanus), slightly enlarged in medial 2 rows, flesy flap in external 2 rows; 2 rows of suckers with fleshy flap at basal part (carpus); about 4 pairs of nipplelike papillae at basal end of club; sucker rings with 13-16 sharp teeth alternating with square teeth. Color reddish brown, darker on dosal surface of mantle. Attains at least 36 cm ML.
Distribution:
Known from Argentine waters south of 38°S and southern Chile.
Remarks:
This species differs from other species of Ommastrephidae in characteristics of tentacles and suckers on arms.
