Description:
Body mascular, mantle broad and covered by rough skin with irregular furrows.
Fins large, triangular; length 50-52%, width 62-64% of dosal mantle length
(ML); fin angle 50°-53°. Head slenderer than mantle, width 17-18% of ML;
no neck folds. Funnel-mantle rocking apparatus simple and straight. Eyes
without cornea. Buccal menbrane connectives attach to the dorsal side of
arms T and U, and to the ventral sides of arms V and W. Arms nearly equal
in length; suckers in 2 rows, without hook; sucker rings smooth. Tentacles
long; the clubs 27-32% of ML, 27-30 hooks in 2 rows on mid part (nanus),
minute 10-13 suckers and the simialr number of warts on a patch at basal
part (carpus), minute 14-16 suckers in about 4 rows at the tip (dactylus).
Color reddish brown. Attains 40 cm ML.
Distribution:
High latitudes in the Southern Hemisphere. Deeper than 120 m, at least south of 37°S in the Argentine waters.
Remarks:
This species differs from other related species in having simple funnel-mantle rocking apparatuses, 2 rows of suckers on arms, 2 rows of hooks on tentacles, no neck folds, and rough skin.
