Material examined:
FSFL EM412 (1♂-42°01′S, 63°58′W, 106 m deep; June 2, 1978); EM516 (1♀ infested by a sacculinid parasite-40°01′S, 61°01′W, 40 m deep; June 4, 1978); EL 872 (2♀♀-40°06′S, 56°15′W, 155 m deep; June 8, 1978). Breadth of carapace, 7.5-12 cm.
Description:
A large species. Carapace transversely elliptical in its outline, its dorsal surface being flattened and separated into symmetrical regions by shallow and wide furrows; protogastric region large and confluent anteriorly with small epigastric region and posteriorly with large mesogastric region, the latter of which is also confluent with the cardiac region through a strong lateral constriction. Front strongly developed and divided into 2 lobes, being only 15% the breadth of carapace; inner end of each lobe strongly developed as a blunt tubercle, and outer end deeply separated from a tuberculated supraorbital angle; orbit small, but deep; external orbital angle only indicated by anterior end of first anterolateral tooth. Anterolateral border separated into 4 teeth; the first truncated and almost transverse; the second subdivided into 2 teeth, the anterior of which is larger and armed with an accessory tooth at each side of its tip; the third and the fourth sharp, the posterior slope of the third being bordered with 2 or 3 accessory teeth. Chelipeds heavy and almost smooth; fingers as long as palm and armed with blunt teeth, being prominently dark in color. Ambulatory legs comparatively narrow, with a longitudinal furrow on upper surface of each carpus; dactyli with velvet-like tomenta.
Distribution:
Uruguay to Patagonia; 40-115 m deep.
Remarks:
This species is readily distinguished from the other two representatives, P. orbignyi (H. Milne Edwards et Lucas) from Peru and Chile, and P. crenulatus A Milne Edwards from Uruguay and Patagonia, by having the sharp anterolateral teeth. According to Guinot (1968), P. cokeri Rathbun from Peru may be synonymous with Pelaeus armatus Eydoux et Souleyet from the doubtful locality, Sandwich Island, and also P. balboae Garth from the Panamanian Pacific may also be transferred to Pelaeus.
