Body oval and extremely compressed, body depth 2.3-2.7 cm in SL. Head small, 3.7-4.3 times in SL. Snout blunt. Eye small, about 7 times in SL. Fine villiform teeth on both jaws. No teeth on vomer or palatines. Mouth small, posterior end of upper jaw situated about halfway between snout tip and anterior margin of eye, upper jaw slightly anterior to lower jaw. Nostrils closely situated each other and nearer to snout tip than to anterior margin of eye, anterior nostril round and posterior nostril crescent. Gill-rakers on first arch slender, short. Pseudobranchiae present. Body covered with small thin deciduous scales. Head naked except opercle. Dorsal fin with a prominent anterior lobe, its base long. Anal fin similar to dorsal fin in size and shape. Pectoral fin moderate in size, about equal to or slightly shorter than head. No pelvic fins. Caudal fin fairly deeply forked. Lateral line gradually curved and subparallel to dorsal profile, its posterior end obscure. Body blue green dorsally and silvery white ventrally. Margin of fins darker. Small dark blue spots (about equal to eye diameter) on dorsal side of body.
Distribution:
The Pacific coast of South America, Chile and rarely north to off Callao, Peru.
Remarks:
Stromateus maculatus Cuvier, 1833 and Stromateus advectitus Whitley, 1935 are junior synonyms of this species (Haedrich, 1967). The young of Stromateus commonly associate with medusa and sometimes are observed eating jelly fish.
