北西大西洋に近縁のA. y-graecumとA. guttatusが分布するが(Berry and Anderson, 1961),眼の後方の発電器の形で異る。

Head very large, depressed dorsally, compressed toward tail, Mouth extremely oblique, opened dorsally. Eyes very small, separated each other on dorsal surface. Dorsal surface of head covered with bony plates. Body covered with small strong ctenoid scales except for posterior part of head, bases of dorsal and pectoral fins and anterior part of belly. Both lips, anterior and posterior nostrils emarginated by prominent racemuloses. Two strong short spines anterior to eye. Posterior part of head, opercle, lower margin of preopercle and upper part of pectoral base spineless. Dorsal spine well separated each other, strong and low; fin membrane low. Lateral line running parallel to base of dorsal fin, curved at mid point of caudal peduncle. Gill-rakers knob-like. Large triangular electric organs situated posterior to eye. Low fleshy fold running from base of pelvic fin to anus along the midline of belly. Dorsal part of body yellowish green; head vaguely brownish; ventral greyish white; racemuloses purplish in formalin fixed materials.
Distribution:
From Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to northern part of Argentina. Inhabiting shallow (30 m depth) coastal waters(Steindachner, 1876).
Remarks:
Closely related species, A. y-graecum and A. guttatus are distributed in the western North Atlantic (Berry and Anderson, 1961), they differ from this species in shape of electric organ.
