Body extremely rubust, fairly compressed, tail slender. Head 2.3-2.6 times, body, depth about 4.5 times in SL. Mouth very large, protrusible; upper jaw extending nearly to posterior margin of eye. Fleshy lips developed on both jaws. Fine sharp conical teeth in bands on both jaws, vomer and palatines. Gill-rakers nub-like, with fine serrations. Opercular flap well developed. Pseudobranchiae present. A nostril with a small tube. Interorbital region narrow, well convex, its width less than half of eye diameter. Eye small, 2.0-2.3 times in snout length. Pectoral fin short and wide, its length about 2 times in head, lower rays unbranched and fairly thick. Pelvic fin situated extremely anterior to pectoral fin base, its length slightly shorter than pectoral fin. First dorsal fin high with long base, its longest spine slightly longer than snout. Second dorsal fin fairly high with long base. Anal fin similar to second dorsal fin, but its base slightly shorter than second dorsal fin base. Caudal fin subtruncate. Lateral line fairly straight, parallel to dorsal profile, running from upper insertion of opercle to caudal fin base. Head, trunk and tail covered with ctenoid scales; scales on head smaller, scales on lateral part of body ciliated. Fine scales on upper part of sclera.
Distribution:
Both Chilean and Argentine Patagonia.
Remarks:
This species shows considerable variation in the size of eye, height of the fins or the color in life. These were recognized the variation within the species by Norman(1937a).
