Body elongate, compressed, body depth 3.7-3.9 times in SL. Head small, 3.4-3.7 times in SL. Mouth large, posterior margin of upper jaw extending to below middle of pupil. Lower jaw extending slightly anterior to upper jaw. Fine conical teeth in bands on both jaws. No teeth on vomer or palatines. Nostrils situated somewhat apart each other, anterior nostril slightly nearer to anterior margin of eye than to tip of snout; anterior nostril circular and posterior nostril crescent. No barbels on chin. Gill-rakers short with squarish tip and fine inner serrations. Pseudobranchiae developed. Interorbital region round and fairly wide, its width slightly shorter than snout. Posterior margin of preopercle finely serrated. Pectoral fin short, nearly equal to postorbital length. Pelvic fin situated slightly behind posterior insertion of pectoral fin. Bases of second dorsal and anal fins covered with small scales. Caudal fin fairly emarginate with deep caudal peduncle. Lateral line gently curved anteriorly and nearly straight posteriorly running from posttemporal region to posterior margin of caudal fin. Large cycloid scales on body, head covered with smaller cycloid scales except both jaws. Body dark brown above and silvery white below.

Remarks:
Cynoscion analis and C. altipinis which are closely related to this species known from Peru and Chile are not identical to this species.
