Body high, compressed, especially considerably elevated anteriorly. Eye large, upper margin reaching upper profile of head. Nostrils rounded and situated anterior to eye; anterior nostril rounded in shape with tube. Mouth large; posterior end of upper jaw extended below mid point of eye. Teeth on both jaws villiform bands; vomer and palatine also finely toothed. Posterior margin of preopercle serrated; two spines present on opercle. Third spine of dorsal fin filamentous. Pectoral fin large, fan shaped; its tip extending posterior to anal fin origin. Caudal fin margin truncated. Gill-rakers short. Upper part of body light brownish; belly silvery. Two dark purplish broad bands on body; anterior band running from anterior part of first dorsal fin base to belly, posterior band from anterior second dorsal fin base to posterior anal fin base. Indistinct two broad bands present posteriorly on head and on caudal peduncle. Each fin pale brownish; tips of pelvic and anal fins and lower part of caudal fin slightly blackish.
Distribution:
From Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to northern Argentina in depths of 15 m and 135 m.
Remarks:
Figueiredo and Menezes (1980) reported that this species attains 19 cm in the text, but 22.1 cm in the figure caption. Seems to be small fish as Serranidae.
